Gluten Free Pizza Base

Finding out that you have food intolerances which require you to eliminate certain foods from your diet can be heart-breaking. This is especially true if pizza is a large part of your diet (like it is ours). It can be particularly challenging if your food intake was once based heavily upon pastas, noodles, breads and cereals and you find out you are intolerant to gluten. 

The following recipe will make two 12” round pizzas, so you can adjust accordingly if needed.

You will need:

  • – 3 ½ cups gluten-free flour
  • – 4 tsp baking powder
  • – Pinch of salt
  • – 2 tbsp olive oil
  • – 1 ½ cups lukewarm water
  •  

Method:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
  2. Add the olive oil, water, and combine with your hands until fully mixed. If you have a stand mixer with a bread hook, this could make it easier and quicker. 
  3. You may have to add an extra ½ cup water if the dough is on the sticky side – more water is often required with gluten-free flour.
  4. Once ready, cover lightly with cling film and leave to chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to make it easier to handle.
  5. Remove from the fridge and place on a lightly floured surface. Separate into two, and mold into smooth balls. 
  6. Roll each dough ball flat until they’re about 12”, rotating and shaping regularly to prevent it sticking.
  7. Brush the dough with a bit of olive oil to aid browning and prevent it sticking.
  8. Top each pizza with desired sauce and toppings, and transfer to your pizza oven.
  9. Bake each pizza for around 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted, and crust starts to puff and to brown.

Gluten-free recipes can be hard to get just right. They’re usually not as flavorsome as the gluten alternatives and provide less than memorable results. The good news is that it is becoming a lot easier to make gluten-free switches of almost everything, simply by substituting regular flour with gluten-free flour.

This delicious recipe also takes under an hour to prepare, so is perfect for those days where the weather ends up being a lot nicer than expected, and you suddenly decide you want to power up the outdoor pizza oven to prepare dinner while enjoying the sunset.
